When Mayor Hernandez-Thorpe moved to Antioch 12 years ago, Humphrey’s on the Delta was going out of business; the Riverview Lodge was barely hanging on, downtown was a ghost town, the Antioch Mall was in a downward spiral, the Delta Fair Shopping Center had lost its anchor business FoodMaxx to Deer Valley Plaza, and much more.
Today, things are a little different. Downtown is now home to two Bay Area favorites–Smith’s Landing and Monica’s Riverview–and is slated to bring in new fine dining, a cannabis dispensary, and much more! Antioch has reopened its deep waterports and is home to a Marine Terminal for AMPORTS, one of the world's largest transporters. The Cannabis Industry is thriving! But there’s still work to grow the local economy and revitalize key commercial areas around Delta Fair Blvd, 18th and A, and Sycamore Plaza.
As your Mayor, we…
(1) Approved the City’s Economic Development Strategic Plan called “Reinvest Antioch.”
(2) Bolstered the cannabis industry by expanding the city’s “Green Zone” into downtown and Delta Fair to diversify our local economic base.
(3) Approved the City’s Commercial Infill Housing (CIH) Overlay District to fast-track the construction of commercial and residential buildings (similar to condos and apartment complexes in and around downtown Walnut Creek) in troubled properties like Delta Fair Shopping Center, the Antioch Mall, and Deer Valley Plaza.
(4) Welcomed the opening of a new Marine Terminal for AMPORTS, the second-largest automotive transporter in the world, helping re-activate the city’s waterfront industry.
(5) Launched Antioch’s Small Business program, which provided funding for facade improvements and small business grants.
(6) Ushered in new retail storefronts, such as Ross, Travis Credit Union, Chick-fil-A, Smash Burger, and many more.
